Eusebius (AD 260 - 339) was a Greek Christian wrtier, often called the "Father of Ecclasiastical History." He was born in Palestine and educated at Caesarea, the city of which he later became bishop.
Eusebius' literary works may be grouped into four categories: the historical, apolgetic, Biblical, and dogmatic.
The Ecclesiastical History [also called The History of the Church from Christ to Constantine] comprises ten books, covering the period from the Church's founding to Licinius' defeat (324).
A Preparation for the Gospel covers 15 books, showing that Christians prefer Judaism to paganism. Its continuation, Proof of the Gospel, describes how the Christian religion is the fulfillment of the Old Testament.
Among his other works are the Onomasticon, gazetteer of Bible sites; Commentary on the Psalms, of which only fragments remain; and the two books known as Against Marcellus.
Eusebius is sometimes called the "Christian Herodotus," having earned legitmate fame as the historian of Christian antiquity.
Eusebius was a bishop and learned scholar who spent most of his life in Caesarea in Palestine.
His account is the only surviving historical record of the Church during its first 300 years.
He broke new ground in writing the History of the Church and providing a model for all later ecclesiastical historians.
He traces the Church's history from the time of Christ to the Great Persecution at the beginning of the fourth century and ends with the conversion of Emperor Constantine.
In doing so, Eusebius aims to show the purity and continuity of the doctrinal tradition of Christianity and its stuggle against persecutors and heretics.
